Burning to death in a wrecked car is one of the most vivid driving fears, fed by decades of films in which any serious collision ends in a fireball. The image is specific and visceral: trapped against a jammed door while flames climb from the engine bay. Because the scene is so cinematically common, many drivers quietly treat post-crash fire as a routine consequence of a bad accident rather than the rare event it is. Real collisions almost never ignite, and when they do, most occupants get out. The fear runs far ahead of the arithmetic.

The U.S. Fire Administration's Highway Vehicle Fires report (2014-2016) records an average of ~345 civilian deaths per year from highway vehicle fires, of which 62 percent resulted from collisions — about 214 post-crash fire deaths per year. Spread across ~335 million US residents that is ~6.4e-7 per person per year; over a 59-year adult horizon, 1-(1-6.4e-7)^59 ≈ 3.8e-5, or roughly 1 in 25,000. The more recent NFPA Vehicle Fires report (2018-2022) counts a higher ~579 total vehicle-fire deaths per year; applying the same ~62% collision share gives ~359 post-crash deaths and a lifetime figure near 6e-5 (~1 in 16,500), which sets the upper bound. The lower bound reflects the genuine ambiguity in attributing cause of death: FARS records whether fire was present in a fatal crash, but in many of those cases the occupant was killed by collision trauma and the vehicle burned afterward, so the count of deaths actually *caused* by the fire is smaller than the count of fire-involved fatal crashes. This is a population-average figure; crash severity, vehicle age, and the ability to exit move an individual's risk by an order of magnitude (see factors).

The headline ~1-in-25,000 figure uses the USFA collision-death count (214/yr); the NFPA-based upper bound (~359/yr) gives ~1 in 16,500. The multipliers are mechanism-based and directional rather than precisely quantified — published per-factor relative risks for post-crash fire death specifically are sparse, so they are calibrated to the qualitative findings (collision severity, engine-area origin, egress) rather than to exact effect sizes. Electric-vehicle high-voltage battery fires after severe crashes are a distinct and still-emerging risk not separated out here; the historical data are dominated by internal-combustion fuel fires. A second emerging caveat cuts against the "a modern car makes egress easy" assumption built into the protective factor below: electronic and flush retractable door handles can leave an uninjured, conscious occupant unable to exit when the 12-volt system dies on impact and the rear mechanical release is hidden, unlabeled, or absent. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation in December 2025 covering 179,071 model-year-2022 Tesla Model 3 vehicles (a driver reportedly escaped through the rear window after a fire) and a September 2025 probe of ~174,290 model-year-2021 Model Y vehicles; a Bloomberg analysis counted at least 15 deaths over 2012-2025 in crashed Teslas whose powered doors would not open, and China has drafted a rule (effective 2027) mandating mechanical interior and exterior releases. These are open investigations and lawsuits, not adjudicated causation, and the absolute counts are tiny against the whole fleet — they do not move the headline figure — but they are a documented egress-failure mode distinct from the fuel- and battery-ignition mechanisms above.

Either way, spread across a 59-year adult lifetime, the probability of dying in a fire after a crash lands somewhere around 1 in 25,000 — rarer than dying in the crash itself by a factor of more than two hundred.

Collisions are a small fraction of all vehicle fires — most car fires start in parked or driven vehicles from mechanical and electrical faults, with no crash involved — but they cause the majority of the deaths. The reason is mechanical: high-energy impacts rupture fuel lines and electrical systems, and the engine area, the leading point of origin, is also the deadliest. The fire is not usually what kills a healthy, belted occupant who can open a door. It becomes lethal when the crash has already done damage: a jammed door, an incapacitating injury, a person who cannot get clear in the seconds that matter. Entrapment, not flame, is the operative risk.

The number is also softer than it looks, and in the reassuring direction. Crash records note whether a fire was present, not whether it caused the death, and in many fire-involved fatal crashes the occupant was killed on impact and the vehicle burned afterward — so the count of deaths the fire actually caused is smaller than the count of fatal crashes that involved one. Fuel-system integrity standards phased in during the 1970s cut fuel-fed post-crash fires substantially, which is why the risk concentrates in older vehicles and the most severe collisions. The fear is real and old; the modern car, belted occupant, and a few seconds to exit have made the outcome it pictures genuinely uncommon.
